Introduction to Vallejo, California
Vallejo has twice been the capital of California. Once in 1852 for one week, and again in 1853 for one month. The city is named after a Mexican military officer, Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. Vallejo is a city of of nearly 120,000 people located in the Bay Area, near Mare Island, and on the Napa River. Vallejo is located on the southern tip of the Napa Valley, forty minutes north of San Francisco, thirty minutes north of Oakland, and twenty to thirty minutes south of Napa and Sonoma in California wine country.

Vallejo (Vallejo-Fairfield-Napa) was ranked ninth on Inc. magazine's 2004 "Top 25 Cities for Doing Business in America" study in the "Medium Cities" category. Both large nearby large cities, Oakland and San Francisco, were ranked among the top fifteen "Most Fun U.S. Cities" in a study conducted by Cranium, Inc. in 2004.

Demographics

As of the census of 2005, there were 125,900 people, 39,601 households, and 28,235 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,868.9/mi. There were 41,219 housing units at an average density of 1,365.4/mi. The racial makeup of the city was 30.97% White, 30.69% African American, 0.66% Native American, 19.16% Asian, 1.09% Pacific Islander, 7.88% from other races, and 6.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19.92% of the population.

ImageThere were 39,601 households out of which 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were married couples living together, 16.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.43.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
