American Canyon is Napa County's newest and second-largest city, incorporated in 1992. American C anyon City Council Members Don Callison and Joan Bennett traveled with me, Doris Gentry recently on a tour of American Canyon - one stop we made was to the wonderful fire Department on Donaldson Way and visited with the Fire Chief Glen Weeks. During the tour of the facilities, we were very interested in seeing how well the kitchen turned out - a photo of that is included - yes, I would love to own a kitchen this modern, efficient and well-planned. The planners did a great job with the entire design and construction of this site. My hats off to all of you!
The American Canyon Fire Department is certainly ready to meet the needs of its community.
For those who drive north up Highway 80, it's the "gateway" to the Napa Valley.
Incorporated in 1992, the City of American Canyon is already the 2nd largest city in Napa County. The current population is approximately 14,300 residents with an estimated build-out population ( population that would occur if all of the available lots were occupied by at least one dwelling ) of over 20,000.
Located in the southern portion of Napa County, truly the "Gateway to the Napa Valley". Bounded by the Napa River and a 500-acre wetlands preserve to the west; the foothills of the Sulphur Springs Mountain Range to the east; the City of Vallejo to the south and the Napa Airports along with many vineyards to the north.

There are many wonderful and exciting things happening in American Canyon - the Gaia Hotel is certainly one - it is a totally GREEN hotel which means the project had to meet the green standards from the foundation all the way through project completion. The Gaia was the second stop on our tour of the city - and wow - it was stunning. Not only is the property outstanding, the staff is delightful. They are all smiling and courteous. Everyone is buzzing around with efficiency and attention to detail.
Included above and below are some shots of Gaia's people and including, the manager, and assistant manager, the chef is above and also a photo of me with the swan - the swans can even come and go - of course they know a good meal when they see one so like the guests - they choose to stay!
In the photo of the gauges - I hope you can read those dials, inside the Gaia, these are on the wall in the lobby so you can see instantly the electric use and monitor the other important green emissions information.
As for the growth of American Canyon - wow is the only thing that I can say. They have been working on controlled growth and have implemented a nice visual plan to the Wal-Mart Shopping Area. I know that was a big pain in the sides of some when being proposed, but now it is built and the entire site is lovely. You can immediately see the vast parking and it makes you feel like going there to shop. It is frustrating when you cannot find parking. I heard from on American Canyon person that Wal-Mart might need more parking - I can believe that - seems like that lot is full no matter when you drive past.
What does that full parking lot mean to American Canyon? Money in the bank - this is the way cities grow and prosper and thrive - shopping. We need shopping to get the sales tax and we need the sales tax to help run cities. It is a cycle and American Canyon has done some really great things to not only bring in a great mix of stores but also to keep it all aesthetically pleasing - way to GO American Canyon. To the left are some shots I took of the property from a far off hillside.
To the right is Don Callison showing me some important new places the shopping center will be developing soon - in fact, they have probably started! And then also - the last shot is of Don Callison, Joan Bennett and I - we had spent many hours together touring, discussing and viewing a really great and lovely city.
